Dulce Pontes has been the queen of Portuguese fado (the word translates literally to "fate"). Times have changed and what was once a cry wrung from the guts of Lisbon's bawdiest waterfront dives now often falls somewhere between a polite drawing room exercise and trivial pop. This live double CD captures a singer in her vocal prime and proves that she is not a studio phenomenon but a concert artist of the first order. Her pipes are miraculous, and comparisons to Barbra Streisand are more apt than not, and on several levels. In Pontes's hands, the old-time dignified despair of fado materializes in fits and starts, although minus much of its bracing vulgarity. But whether she will evolve beyond mere histrionics to achieve that intimate understanding of tragedy shared by the greatest fadistas remains to be seen.

DUKE OF BURLINGTON - Flash [1970]

Multi-instrumentalist, session man and conductor Mario Battaini (Milano, 1931-2000) was the mystery genius behind "The Duke Of Burlington". His recordings were very popular and successful in Italy & Europe during the 60's & 70's. "Lounge Music-Flash" is a good anthology of oldies from his two records originally released by Signal & Joker "The Pressed Piano" & "Indian Fig", now rare collectors' items. The classic cover of "Flash" is included, plus a great selection of originals (under the pseudonym of Lumni) and other tracks in various styles: the Duke's knowledge of soul, funk, rock, psychedelic, prog, folk, library music & easy listening is amazing, sometimes better than the original versions and the final effect is extremely entertaining. Listen to it now and you will find all today's lounge classic genres! This is the only cd version available at the moment: the remastering sounds great but I give the cd 4 stars for the omission of L.S.D., the sexiest lounge track ever.

CAN - Ege Bamyasi [1972]

By the time of 1972's Ege Bamyasi, Can had consolidated, with singer Damo Suzuki fully entrenched as the unstable Michael Mooney's replacement. Suzuki's vocals range from shrieks to inaudible chanting, tackling subjects as mundane as "your vitamin C" while implying an archetypal depth. Evidence of a band at the height of their interactive powers is here. Anchored by the "percussion and flexation" (as he's credited) of Jaki Liebezeit, Can delivers seven pounding sermons of rhythmic prowess, peaking with the 10:30 sound storm of "Soup." Liebezeit's long drum riff in "Pinch" (pegged by a resounding bass thoom at the end of each repetition) creates an ellipse in which feedback bursts, guitar and keyboard note clusters, and Damo's vocal witchery combine into a perfectly balanced, loping cyclone, with each element beautifully playing off the next. Like Miles's On the Corner, Ege Bamyasi is a definitive statement on merging jazz ideology with the surging menace of rock & roll.

BUIKA - Nipa de fuego [2008]

Concha Buika is a Spanish singer.
Her family came from Equatorial Guinea and she grew up among gypsy people. Her music mixes flamenco with soul, jazz and funk.
She was born in Palma de Mallorca in 1972. Ever since she was a child her musical talent was evident, but it was after a visit to London to study drama when, after being invited to a concert by Pat Metheny that her life changed.
From that moment she began her musical career. During the 90s she took part in different productions, such as 'Ombra' by La Fura dels Baus or the soundtrack for the Spanish movie 'km.O'. At the same time she composed several songs such as 'Ritmo para voçé', 'Up to the sky' and 'Loving you' (all of them house successes in Europe).
From November 2000 to March 2001 she sang at The Luxor, Harrah's and Gold Coast casinos in Las Vegas. She also performed as a guest singer in the 'Blue Note' festival in the same city together with Rachelle Ferrell.
Concha is a singer who handles many musical styles (jazz, bolero, flamenco, funk, ...). She is one of the most lively and spontaneous artists in the current Spanish musical scene.

FRANCE GALL - Evidemment [The Best of France Gall] [2004]

The baby doll who illuminated the sixties, alive legend of the French song, heart breaker who inspired the planetary tubes like "My way" (in French "Comme d'habitude" by Claude Francois), it's France Gall. Always for her, another French singer, Julien Clerc, sang "To suffer by you is not to suffer" ("Souffrir par toi n'est pas souffrir"). The union of her life with Michel Berger is marked by a great song, "The declaration of love" ("La declaration d'amour") followed of the arrival to the world of two children and innumerable hits.
After 40 years of songs and 30 years at Warner, here the artistic result of the "Doll of sound" who becomes a woman of flesh who sings. All the great compositions written by Michel Berger and remastered under the direction of Bruck Dawit are there: "Music", "If, mom, if " ("Si, maman, si"), "Need for love" ("Besoin d'amour"), "He played piano standing" ("Il jouait du piano debout"), "Very for the music" ("Tout pour la musique"), "Resists", "Diego, free in his head " ("Diego, libre dans sa tete"), "To give to give" ("Donner pour donner" duet with Elton John), "Disconnects" ("Debranche"), "Cezanne is painting" ("Cezanne peint"), "Ella, she has it " ("Ella, elle l'a"), "The only thing which counts" ("La seule chose qui compte"). Essential compilation, obviously (Evidemment) !

I've been listening to Tom Jones for 30 years and I am continually amazed at his ability to put his personal stamp on all kinds of music. This collection of songs is original, upbeat, and fun. His voice is amazing, as usual. It's difficult to pick a favorite track, because they are all terrific in their own way. However, an absolute hit is "Tom Jones International." And, for long-time fans, the remix of "I Who Have Nothing" is a gem. The master is back and better than ever!

FREDERICO DOCI - Canterina [2005]

The double CD, Canterina, marks the first major recording in 10 years by international singing sensation Frederik Doci. It's a rhapsody of romance, passion and melody, Standout tracks include: Malaguena Salerosa, Frederik's signature song where pure mariachi meets a modern beat; Anche Senza Di Te, the Italian pop smash hit; El Dichoso Soy Yo, the warm and tender Latin ballad; Return to Me, the valiant cover of an early October Project hit; Bizet's Pearls, where opera meets Cirque du Soleil as Frederik sings in baritone, tenor, and countertenor; Caruso Medley, where Neapolitan meets the blues; Falling in Love Again, the definitive male version of the Marlene Dietrich classic; Mavre Gialia, the Greek power ballad cover of Anna Vissi; Zonja Shkoder, the original Albanian anthem; La Danza, hi-energy Rossini where opera and dance collide, and many more exciting tracks.

As in nearly all the years ahead, there were plenty of hit singles with both"LIVING DOLL" and "TRAVELLING LIGHT" reaching No. 1 in the British charts. He was involved with two films: "Serious Charge" and "Expresso Bongo". The then major British teen music paper - New Musical Express - gave Cliff his first award - fans had voted him "Best New Singer". He bought himself a fabulous pink and black motor scooter and from the royalties of "MOVE IT" could also afford one of the new super hi-fi stereos (with some change to spare). He was hot magazine copy: Reveille headlined with "He Doesn't Try To Be Sexy", while the top-selling Daily Mirror thought the fans loved his eyes, calling them "dark, luminous and slumberous."
The young ones [1961]
He filmed "The Young Ones" and the title track gave him another No. 1 with more than one million sales. He became an international star and toured in many parts of the world while his backing group - The Shadows - were fast becoming stars in their own right. Cliff topped the LP charts with "21 TODAY" - issued by EMI to commemorate his 21st birthday -and The Variety Club of Great Britain made him "Show Business Personality of the Year"
Romantic collection [1964]
Cliff starred in another film, "Wonderful Life", which was filmed in north-west Africa, the soundtrack reached No. 2. He appeared on a number of TV shows in the U.K. and Europe and starred in a one-hour TV special for ATV with Liza Minelli. He had five Top 10 hits in the UK singles charts (compared to the Beatles' three) and although it was The Beatles who made the headlines, Cliff held his own as a British pop star. He ended the year by starring in a pantomime, "Aladdin And His Wonderful Lamp".

NINA PASTORI - Maria [2002]

For any Nina Pastori fan, or anyone just interested in flamenco. While this genre ("Nuevo Flamenco") has it's critics, it's increasing popularity has made it a way for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience music that is also very much a part of Spain. I first heard of "La Nina" while there two years ago; she has become so popular there since. While my favorite is still "Canailla" (mostly for sentimental reasons), this album is more of Nina's flamenco-pop fusion, although perhaps even more impressive. ("Tu Dime" even has a rap!) Of all the tracks, "De Mil Colores" stands out as the closest to true flamenco with a haunting, beautiful melody. From the rumbera "Amor de San Juan" to the beautiful "Valgame Dios" this album will transport you to the most beautiful parts of Spain, even if you're listening to your Walkman in the middle of Times Square. . .

CESARIA EVORA - Cesaria [1995]

Cesaria Evora, a Cape Verdean with a rich alto voice, has been described as a cross between Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday. It wasn't until 1988, though, that Evora traveled to Paris to record. Her fourth album, 1992's Miss Perfumado, made her a major star in France and Portugal. Her 1994 album, Cesaria Evora, duplicated that triumph, and it's this latter recording that has become her first U.S. release. Evora, celebrated in Europe as the "Barefoot Diva," is now 52, but she is still able to give every word a breathy intimacy even as she fills it with a pitch-perfect, full-toned resonance. Drawing on the work of top Cape Verdean songwriters Nando Da Cruz, Amandio Cabral, and Manuel De Novas, she sings in Criuolo, a Creole variation of Portuguese. As in Brazil, another former Portuguese colony with a strong African influence, Cape Verde has produced a music that is light and airy even as it incorporates African rhythms and quartertones. The morna possesses the low-key tunefulness of an equatorial cabaret music, but Evora's vocals impart a world-weary gravity to these tales of homesickness and doomed love.

ENRICO MACIAS

French singer. Originally a teacher, he became known to the public after a tour with Billy Bridge. Repatriated from Algeria, he became the singer of the Pieds-Noirs. With ‘Les filles de mon Pays’ his success even had echoes in Algeria, where he was banned. ‘Les Gens du Nord’ and ‘L'Ile du Rhone’ began a period where the singer dedicated his compositions to friendship between peoples.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER - Jesus Christ superstar [OST] 1973

I'm a huge fan of "Jesus Christ Superstar," and while I love the original 1970 album, the 1973 movie version/soundtrack album is equally just as powerful. While the 1970 version remains the best "Superstar" recording in several ways, certainly in regards to production and sound quality, the 1973 movie version tops the original recording in one respect at least: it's the only Complete version of "Jesus Christ Superstar." The 1973 movie & it's accompanying soundtrack album present "Superstar" in a wonderfully expanded version that actually builds on the amazing accomplishment that composer Andrew Lloyd Webber & lyricist Tim Rice had already achieved with the landmark 1970 album. For the movie version of "Jesus Christ Superstar," Lloyd Webber & Rice had to write some extra material in order to beef up the film. The extra musical goodies they supplied include "Then We Are Decided," a great song that the high priests Caiaphas & Annas sing, in which they contemplate in private their plans against Jesus. This song is a great addition to the opera, as it delves a bit deeper into these two characters & their motives. That it's almost never performed in any stage production of "Superstar" these days is a very sad ommission. "Then We Are Decided," in my opinion, SHOULD be a part of all future "Superstar" recordings and performances. But for now, it's only available on the movie soundtrack.Other bonus material include an extra lyric for Jesus to sing in "Hosanna," the lovely Mary & Peter duet "Could We Start Again Please?" (which IS included in most of the recent "Superstar" productions, thankfully), and last but not least, a dramatic, extended version of the "Trial Before Pilate" that greatly improves on the shorter, original version. The original "Trial" is fine, but there's a LOT more conflict & drama between Pilate & the crowd in the extended "Trial," as Pilate is shown greatly wrestling with his own conscience over what his final decision on Jesus' fate should be. It's a very powerful moment, indeed. Once again, I'm glad that many productions of "Superstar" lately DO incorporate the extended version of the "Trial."You get a marvelous cast that includes brilliant vocal turns by Ted Neely, Carl Anderson, and Yvonne Elliman in their respective roles of Jesus, Judas, and Mary, and, of course, the classic music & lyrics by Lloyd Webber & Rice, performed here with great passion by the assembled musicians, almost just as good as on the original "Superstar" album. The sound quality, however, isn't all that spectacular---it sounds like everyone is singing through a telephone line! (Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit). But nonetheless, the performances are first-rate, and so is the music. In the end, this is an excellent version of this legendary rock opera, and it's the ONLY version of the musical that's 100% complete. Personally, I suggest buying BOTH the movie soundtrack of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and the original 1970 version, too. They compliment each other very well, and they're the only recordings of "Superstar" you'll ever need to own.

ENRICO MACIAS - L' oriental [2004]

For those who lived in Beirut in the late 60s and early 70s, it brings back wonderful memories. The sound is very clear. This is the best of Enrico. Every song is terrific.
Enrico was an born in Algeria to Jewish parents and had to escape to France during the war of Independence. His music is an Andalusian-French-Spanish genre. It sounds Near-Eastern yet European. His first hit was in 1962, and he toured Lebanon and other Mediterranean countries with great success.

GILBERT BECAUD - Collection [1967]

Gilbert Bécaud (October 24, 1927 – December 18, 2001) was a French singer, composer and actor, known as Monsieur 100,000 Volts for his energetic performances. His best-known hit is probably "Et maintenant", a 1961 release that became an English language hit after being translated into "What Now My Love".

PETULA CLARK - C est ma chanson [1988]

Most of the tunes here will be familiar to British and American listeners, the only difference being the French lyrics. As I indicated in my review of Ses plus belles chansons, this contains many of Petula's big sixties French hits not included there, while eight tracks appear on both. Since I wrote that review, different double CD's have been released in France and Canada so there are plenty of ways to collect Petula's French hits.
The songs on this collection include Downtown, This is my song, Romeo, Needles and pins, Anyone who had a heart, Sailor, Romeo, Song of my life, The last waltz and Hello Dolly along with some French songs.
Three French songs worth a special mention are Coeur Blesse, Chariot and O O Sheriff.
Coeur Blesse (Broken heart) is a translation of a John D Loudermilk song titled Torture, so obscure that I've not heard a version in English.
Chariot began life as an instrumental written by Paul Mauriat. With lyrics added, it became a million-selling French number one single for the young and beautiful Petula. Versions in German and Italian were big hits in those countries. I do not know if they were translated from the French or not. English lyrics were written, but they were definitely not translated from the French. A completely different song set to the same tune resulted, called I will follow him. It was a number one hit for Petula in Singapore, but failed to chart for her in Britain and America. Remember, this was a year or two before Downtown. Little Peggy March covered the song and had an American number one.
O O Sheriff is a salacious song, the like of which Petula has never recorded in English. A translation of this and some other French songs can be found on Petula's official website, but briefly the song is about a sheriff who doesn't seem sure what to do with a woman but by the end of the song he's obviously learned what is required.
To sum up, this collection contains a few obvious translations and some interesting French songs, but it is also contains some songs of British or American origin recorded by Petula only in French. This is a truly brilliant compilation, which you can use to convince your friends that songs don't have to be sung in English to be enjoyed.

A.L. WEBBER - The album [Jesus Christ Superstar] [Australian cast] [1992]

This is a very interesting version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical Jesus Christ Superstar. The first time I heard this CD, I was absolutely appalled. "How could they do that to JCSS?!", I exclaimed. But as I listened to it (for some reason it is one of those soundtracks that even if you don't like it, you just keep listening) I really started to like some of it. First of all, be warned, if you do not like the idea of the music of JCSS being changed to be very modern 80's style, do not get this. The entire soundtrack has been updated to 80's style rock music and uses a lot of synthesysors, distorted guitars and electric pianos. John Farnham as Jesus has an extremely excellent voice, but at first I was concerned because he doesn't do a lot of the things most Jesus' have done and takes a lot of risks with the music, most of the time coming out good, for example, "Gethsemane". He did an excellent job with bringing a whole new twist to the muisc instead of copying all the other Jesus'. But some of the time not coming out pleasant, for instance, "Poor Jerusalem" should not have been sung an octave higher and that loud. Jon Stevens as Judas also did an excellent job with his role and really has a good voice too. He really brought a lot to it. John Waters as Pilate didn't do much to bring conviction to his role. The bad parts are first of all Herod's Song. This is the worst track and the worst version of that song I have heard. I still can't listen to all of it. The alteration of Simon Zealotes' song to an 80's dance type workout song was totally wrong. But otherwise, the recording is fairly good when you get used to it. Lots of the additional orchestrations are very good, but some aren't too. I guess that's what you get when you do things like that. Not good to buy if you are just getting into JCSS, but good if you already are into it and are looking for something new.

VARIOUS - We Will Rock You [musical] [live] [2003]

Taking its cue from the success of "Mamma Mia!", "We Will Rock You" takes another mega-famous 70's group, Queen, and forces its hit songs into a convoluted story to create a musical with nostalgic appeal. The plot has something to do with a futuristic world where music is banned, thus forcing the "bohemians" to rebel against their oppressors to bring rock music to all, or... something like that. The story definitely gets muddled on this album. It really doesn't matter, though- the plot is just an excuse to showcase some familiar hit songs. To that extent, I think a lot of Queen fans and musical fans (not that the two are mutually exclusive) will get a kick out of this enjoyable live recording.
by a talented cast. Tony Vincent, from the Broadway revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar," stars, and he's an impressive vocalist. He and the rest of the performers bring cMany of Queen's biggest hits are here ("Killer Queen," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We are the Champions," etc.), and they're sung with great flaironviction and a ton of energy to the songs, and the result is undeniably exciting.
Even though the artistic merits of so-called "jukebox" musicals can be questionable, the recording of "We Will Rock You" is kind of refreshing. There's really nothing pretentious about it. It just wants to, well, ROCK you. It succeeds.

EVA CASSIDY - Live at Pearl's [1994]

Live at Pearl's is a cd which displays the gifts of the late singer Eva Cassidy. Eva possessed a voice which was capable of a wide range of emotions. She sang with a sweetness and purity which was suitable for a variety of styles. Her emotion filled voice was wonderfully adaptable and she could sing blues, jazz and folk with equal skill. Eva had a gentle wistful voice which was both pleasant to listen to and suitable for her chosen songs. Joel Siegel states in a biographical clip that Eva "viewed her talent as a gift and an obligation."

BARBRA STREISAND - Je M'Appelle Barbra [1966]

Streisand, at the height of her 60's-phase, is flamboyantly "Barbra" on this album. At times quiet and touching, and then loud and over the top, this album is a mixture of styles and quite good. "Ma Premiere Chanson" is Barbra's "first song". It is simple and elegant. "I Wish You Love" is performed as a swinging revenge song. I love Barbra's reading of the lyric here -- she sounds like she's seething with anger: "And in Julyyyy, a lemonade, to coooool you in a leafy glade..." It's really wonderful. "Martina" is very moving. And "Once Upon A Summertime" and "Autumn Leaves" are brilliant, classic songs which lend authority to this album. Barbra's performances are flawless and the arrangements are quite beautiful.

JEWEL

This way [2001]

It's easy to see that Jewel wants to lighten up. With two previous multimillion-selling albums (and a couple of much-scorned but popular books) filled with earnest, clueless revelations behind her, the singer-songwriter comes a little closer to ground with This Way. "Give it hell 'til the end," a former compatriot urges her on "Till We Run Out of Road," her version of Jackson Browne's "The Load Out." Could that be a hard-bitten road warrior deep inside the woman who makes a point of pronouncing the O's in the opening line ("Mirror, mirror") of this CD's "Serve the Ego"? Maybe. But despite her icky streak's spread to cutesy jokes ("Jesus Loves You"), Jewel hasn't quite abandoned her old judgmental ways (in "I Won't Walk Away," she spies a couple "resisting being one") and ambitions to, you know, really say something, as in the "Desolation Row"-lite "The New Wild West." Still, with some nice, if bland, arrangements set around her, This Way is the Jewel album most likely to appeal to Jewel non-fans
Spirit [1998]
It's time for an update of our image of Jewel, the ingenue who set the music world on fire with her 1995 debut album, Pieces of You. After all, that effort consisted primarily of songs Jewel had written several years before, some of them dating back to her days as a free- spirited waif living in a van on the beach in San Diego. Now, at 25, she's become a sort of guru for self-expression and full disclosure, revealing perhaps too much of herself in see-through dresses worn to awards shows and a critically drubbed (yet bestselling) book of poetry. Spirit makes plain why Jewel's well-intentioned yet sometimes facile lyrics strike a chord with her audience while her poetry lies flat on the page. On songs like "Deep Water," "Hands," and "Down So Long," her words are borne aloft by sparkling melodies and her soaring voice, making even the most cynical observer take a schoolgirl-notebook image such as "your heart like grape gum on the ground" or an unreassuring platitude like "If I could tell the world just one thing / It would be that we're all OK" somewhat in stride. On Pieces of You, Jewel posed the musical question "Who will save your soul?" On Spirit, it sounds like she wants to do it herself. And the truth is, if you don't overanalyze it, the album does act as a sort of balm for wounded psyches or maybe a primer for raising your own inner child. Maybe she's right and we are all OK. Who knew?

ANN MARGRET 1961-66 [1998]

WOW! That In a Word says it all! This set is aimed at collectors. If you arent absolutely crazy about Ann Margret then I doubt you will love this set, but If you are, hold on to your hat, cause this is out of this world! This is pretty much everything Annie recorded for RCA Victor during the sixties, its all here, the fantastic LPs the hard to find 45s some of which took me forever to obtain. In this set, youll get the holy grail for all AM collectors the recording of I aint gonna be your fool any more, most of you will remember this was the song "Ann-Margrock" sang on an episode of The Flintstones, in addtion you get The littlest lamb, the lullaby that she sang to little Pebbles on the same show. You get fun AM songs such as Hey little Star and Man's Favorite Sport (one of my fave 45s) Country songs such as My Last Date With You and What Do You Want From Me, and Rock out Mod 60s tunes such as Someday Soon and He's My Man. The girl sang it all Sountracks, Easy Listening, Rock. Contrary to what "others " might think she has some of the best pipes in the business, and she shows it on songs such as As long as he needs me from Oliver (listen to the ending of this one, its amazing!) She tackled some of the toughest songs such as More and The Good Life and held her own! I only wish I had the type of friends who went out and plunked down a hundred bucks on a CD set.........just because. The set is top notch exactly what we have come to expect from Bear Family, sound quality is terrific, packaging is wonderful, and you get a book with the set, not a booklet but a hard cover BOOK. While I admit the pictures they used are just ok, its mostly outtakes from photo sessions which they used for the Pleasure Seekers and On the Way Up. Its still very nice and its in full Color.

SELENA - Todos mis exitos [1999]

This third compilation of Selena's material is hyped by EMI officials as being a complete collection of her biggest hits. It is no exaggeration. All 16 tracks are hits, and the disc includes her biggest numbers, such as "Amor Prohibido," "Como la Flor," and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." The CD features her English-language hits as well: "I Could Fall in Love," "Dreaming of You," and "Missing My Baby." There's also "Disco Medley Pt. II (Last Dance/The Hustle/On the Radio)," recorded live at the Houston Rodeo. Selena and the band sound sharp and on the money. "On the Radio" impacts in particular, through its lyrics about love conducted in secret--a situation that applied to Selena and her guitarist Chris Perez before they were married in 1992.

PRESUNTOS IMPLICADOS - Postales [2005]

I'm always wondering what they are going to do next. This is a somehow darker album for Presuntos, with lyrics that focus more on the darker side of love, as in "Deshabitada", "Incapaz de sonreir" or "Todo perdido". I was surprised to find a song like "Comedia Divina" with its shuffle rhythm and a melody completely different from what they've done before. They've returned to their signature sounds, not forgetting their jazz color in a great song like "Boleros" or their bossa influence in "Amore". Overall I think this is a great CD, one of their best, and a more personal one, that I think reflects very intimate moments of their lives.

JAMES BLUNT - All the lost souls [2007]

In 2005, James Blunt was everybody's favorite overnight success story. In 2007, he's the guy who's making rock meaningful again. All the Lost Souls,, the sophomore effort from the Brit responsible for restoring the seriousness of "beautiful" as a compliment, brims with big build-ups, epic-sounding ballads, and lyrics to lose yourself in. The vibe, laid out neatly on first single and opening track "1973," is clear-eyed and heavy-hearted; in anybody over 35, it'll produce nostalgia tempered by hopefulness--here's a set that suggests rock has got its head screwed on straight again, that the path to real feelings need not necessarily be led by Norah Jones. In anybody younger, it'll cause the unsinkable suspicion that a lot of modern balladeers should be digging deeper. But in both cases it will satisfy. Compared with David Gray and Damien Rice last time out, this time Blunt seems to owe a debt to Barry Gibb--his voice quavers as sweetly and with the same delicate reach. Stand-outs on a brief but dud-less set include "I Really Want You," in which the sound of Blunt's breaking heart is set sparely and elegantly to something approximating the chirp of a cricket, the poignant and desperate "Give Me Some Love", and the VH-1 ready "Same Mistakes."

JULIO IGLESIAS

Tango [1996]
Tango is wonderful earthy music with lots of sharp edges and angles. If you're a tango purist, you should have known better than to look to Julio Iglesias to provide that...stick with Gardel or Piazzolla. You might as well find fault with a nightengale because it's not a hawk. Julio has delivered exactly what one would expect here...tango with the rough edges filed down and buffed smooth. To his fans this CD is probably an "improvement" on tango. It's lush...it's lovely...it's typically Julio.
Divorcio [2003]
It does not matter where in the world you come from, what race, who you are or what you are - One thing is proven certain - There will be at least one song in Julio's extraordinary multi-lingual repetoire that is guaranteed to please someone somewhere. 'Divorcio', his latest album and nothing to do with his current marital status, is certainly no exception. The very catchy song 'El Bacalao' is bound to make you want to get up and dance, and for those of you who speak or understand Spanish well, the lyrics, whilst simple, pack a punch with sublte double meaning! - Enjoy! Every song on this album, each a gem in it's own right, is beautifully arranged and Julio executes them all to perfection. This man is a class act, a gentleman, and singer with a very deninite and polished style - extremely rare in this day and age!

CAT STEVENS

KCET studio [1971]
Cat Stevens, born Steve Georgiou in London, England, July 21, 1947, was the son of a Greek father and a Swedish mother. People close to him during his career always referred to him as Steve, not Cat. Much of Cat Stevens' success came in the '70s, but his music career began years earlier, when he landed his first hit in England before he turned 20 with the song "I Love My Dog." The song was included on the album "Matthew & Son", released in 1967. He had even more success with other songs from that album, namely the title track, which hit No. 2 on the charts, and "I'm Gonna Get Me a Gun," which reached No. 6. Another song, "Here Comes My Baby," became a hit for The Tremeloes, and the album itself landed in the Top 10.
Catch bull at four [1972]
The rather prolific young musician followed up Matthew & Son with "New Masters", also released in 1967. Although that effort did not reap as many rewards, one track, "Kitty," managed to wedge into the Top 50. Musician P. P. Arnold took another of the album's songs, "The First Cut Is the Deepest," to the Top 20, a song that later became a hit for Rod Stewart. Just a year after both albums were released, Stevens was felled by tuberculosis and took a couple of years off from music.

JOSE FELICIANO

Senor Bolero 1 [1998]

Soulful singer and brilliant guitarist José Feliciano tackles the Latin classics--the timeless boleros that have produced so much haunting intrigue on the subject of romantic love, lost and rediscovered. From the lush opening ballad "Alma Mia" to the R&B-ish closer "Si Me Comprenderias," the CD hums with drama, tension, and revelation. We may be familiar with these evergreens, but Feliciano applies a new gloss and understanding to each. Not every tune connects, but the finest pieces more than compensate for any weaknesses. Highlights include the confessional "Cuando Te Toque Llorar," the exquisite "Rayito de Luna," and the anguished "Que Tristeza." Credit must be given to Feliciano's production team, which includes producer Rudy Perez and arrangers José Molina and Gary Lindsey.
Senor Bolero 2 [2003]
Jose Feliciano has equaled or topped his Senor Bolero CD with this follow-up. It's hard to pick a favorite song since they're all so beautiful. This CD contains not ony Bolero's but also some American and International style Rumbas. This is a must have for the ballroom dancer.

WOODY ALLEN - Wild man blues [1998]

This is an excellent selection of songs from a very good documentary, even if re-recorded ones. This is the ultimate proof that Woody Allen is much more than a wonderful filmaker. This is a great introduction to New Orleans Jazz. This is first-rate music, in a CD you really should listen to.

BEATLES - Blues [2007]

Long overdue 2007 reissue of this unique celebration of the songs of The Beatles, in an unlikely, contemporary Blues setting featuring one bonus track: Tony Wilson's take on 'I Feel Fine'. Originally released in 2001, this project was pulled together by renowned U.S. Bluesman/producer Fred James, who, in addition to his own sides, played on several other tracks and produced and engineered the album. Ever-popular UK Blues heavies like Stan Webb, Paul Lamb, Ruby Turner and Earl Green are juxtaposed alongside US Bluesmen Earl Gaines, Johnny Jones, Charles Walker, Al Garner and Roscoe Shelton.

GIPSY KINGS

Pasajero [2006]
With the feeling of an old-fashioned, locally produced radio show picked up accidentally while touring through the Andes, the Kings’ latest excursion into their patented high-spirited rumba-flamenca harbors a strong South American bias, complete with a chiming charango (armadillo-shell lute) and vintage-sounding squeezeboxes. They also send a big, wet smooch to the late, lamented original Buena Vista Social Club with a delightful cover of Chan Chan. Although less slick than much of their earlier catalog, the set list presented here is also far from rustic and still fairly restaurant-friendly, with kicking bass lines, applied echoes, rhythmic augmentation (as though these guys needed any!) and plenty of other tech-oriented touches; but happily, these don’t get in the way. The leather-lunged yet suavely romantic vocals are as soulful as ever, the guitars as round-toned yet insistent, and the handclaps as festive. But the real good news is that the band seems to have recovered both their primal chops and their sense of humor. Marred only by very occasional bits of over-production and a remarkably chintzy running-time of just over 45 minutes, the album is very nearly perfect, an effervescently virile project that continues and consolidates the career-reviving upswing begun with Roots, back in 2004.
Love songs [1996]
Gipsy Kings are a group from Arles and Montpellier (specifically from a citι outside of Montpellier called Phobos) in France. Their parents fled from Spain during the Spanish Civil War. They are Calι (Gitano) musicians, best known for bringing Rumba Catalana, a pop-oriented version of traditional flamenco music to worldwide audiences. Their music has a particular Rumba Flamenca style, with pop influences; many songs of the Gipsy Kings fit social dances, such as Salsa and Rumba. Their music has been described as a place where "Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk".

DIANA ROSS & SUPREMES

LOVE IS IN OUR HEARTS [2007]
The Supremes were the most successful girl group of all time, and, in their leader Diana Ross, they introduced one of the true music superstars of the 20th Century. And, on hearing the collected tunes here, their deftness of touch with their perfectly-written material is something quite beautiful. The original blend of Ballard, Wilson and Ross is one of the most recognizable in popular music....Enjoy this collection of the Supremes finest love songs: the beautiful depth of 'No Matter What Sign You Are', the down-home wisdom of 'You Can't Hurry Love', the sweet sorrow of 'My World Is Empty Without You' and the eternal optimism of 'Baby Love' are all here, alongside 14 fine examples reminding us of the beauty of Diana Ross and the Supremes at their peak. Spectrum. 2007.
THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION [1997]
The title is a bit of a misnomer: The Supremes are anthologized in more comprehensive fashion on Motown's three-volume Greatest Hits series, while this package is denser, and has a higher hit-per-track ratio. But if you'd rather pick up one collection than three, and if you want a good, thorough skimming of cream from the group's catalog, this is the better choice. All of the familiar songs are here, with no major omissions--and they're packed in with a liberal helping of second-magnitude hits. For a collection that samples only the extreme top end of the Supremes' output, there's Every Great No. 1 Hit, also on Motown. It's missing a lot, but it delivers exactly what it promises.

KELLY CLARKSON

My December [2007]
Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel.
Breakaway [2004]
Kelly Clarkson could have played her American Idol-propelled career much differently, languishing in the role of dippy ingénue or shunting her musical development by leaning too heavily on overnight stardom. Instead she dug in her heels and allowed good sense (or a good manager) to steer, and somewhere Simon Fuller and the rest of the TV gang ought to be smiling. Credit Breakaway, which couldn't be more aptly titled--the sophomore effort represents a seismic split from the thin if pretty debut, Thankful. Here we encounter Clarkson as superstar, with the humility that made her likable on the first disc tucked tightly under her arm. First single and leadoff track "Breakaway" topped the pop charts on arrival, and its rock-friendly thumps, dips, and rolls don't wear out their welcome. Instead, they blend into the firestorm of beats and guitars that is "Since U Been Gone," another shout-it-out rocker. Those songs set the tone for the rest of the disc in all its fury: The innocence is long gone, "Addicted" and "Hear Me" say. The big, expressive voice ringed by the occasional high-pitch trill--the one that prompted millions to get behind her on Idol--doesn't dip entirely off the radar, though. On "Where Is Your Heart" and the stunning live closer "Beautiful Disaster," it's there in full force--a hint, maybe, that despite the wide, smart career step Breakaway represents, her fans come first.

JOHN LENNON

Mind games [1973]
Released in 1973 after the dismal musical detour that was Sometime in New York City, Mind Games showed John Lennon returning to the emotional pop sounds of Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. But while the glorious title track (the album's only hit) was every inch a worthy successor to "Imagine," the rest of the songs were written off by most critics as half-baked experiments. In retrospect, most of them, while not classic stuff, are still better than the bulk of what passed for rock music in the early 1970s. "You Are Here" and "Out of the Blue" are definitely on par with Lennon's best solo work, while "Bring on the Lucie (Freda Peeple)" couches its political barbs in silly good humor. Even better is "Meat City," a rocker as wild and surreal as the "White Album"'s "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey." The 2002 remastered reissue is fleshed out with three "home version" takes of album tracks.
Collection [1989]
John Lennon had a very up-and-down post-Beatles solo career. He may have been the more "serious" songwriter of the Lennon-McCartney duo, but without Paul's steadying influence his solo songwriting became very erratic and only occasionally brilliant. That said, "The John Lennon Collection," with 19 tracks and 71 minutes of music, stands as a fine testament to Lennon's solo career. Hitting all the high points and ignoring his lesser moments, it is everything a casual fan could ask for. All of Lennon's best remembered solo works are here, from the Plastic Ono Band anthem "Give Peace a Chance" to the socialist utopia musings of "Imagine," to the whimsical "Watching the Wheels" and "Mind Games" to his cover version of "Stand By Me." Also included is his holiday staple "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" his tributes to Yoko Ono, "Woman," "Jealous Guy" and "Dear Yoko," as well as early hits "Instant Karma" and "Power to the People." Overall, this substantial one volume anthology album is the perfect helping of John Lennon for the casual fan.

KATIA GUERREIRO - Fado major [2001]

"The face, the hands and the soul. Complete identity, perfect, absolute, but above all, the mirror of people that speak through her, that exists within her, who see themselves in her, who resist and reinvents in her voice.
Of the people who feeds, from the cultures where she was created (the African rhythm and sensuality, the sweet mood of the Azores islands and her eternal Lisbon), also feeds Fado: her chosen form of expression. Universal song, of urban root and nomad soul, liberated of languages, concepts and definitions, communicating though what unites us all: "saudade", joy and grief, love and life.

CHARLES AZNAVOUR - Charles Aznavour 65 [1996]

All of Aznavour's early records are now available: two originals in 1 cd, and those 1964-1965 lps are among the good ones from his peak period.Few songs here appear in the 2 cd collection, but it doesn't mean that they are less good, on the contrary ,since "Je te rechaufferai" one of his best song could have been in it easily. But there are other good songs like "Le toreador, Les filles d' Aujourd' hui" and even a gospel tune and a feminist one in a time when the word was scarcely mentionned. If you like Aznavour, it's worth getting.

EDITH PIAF - Best of...

Edith Piaf (1915-1963) was an unexpected artist, the child of a part-time prostitute and a circus acrobat, raised in a brothel, singing on street corners for pennies in Paris--until 1935, when her success at the famous Paris nightspot Gernys launched her to what would become international stardom. Notorious for her many ill-starred love affairs, attacked as a Nazi sympathizer during the French occupation, belatedly defended as a member of the French Resistance, self-destructing through alcohol and drugs, she proved as unexpected in her personal life as in her talents--but whatever the lady's personal failings, no one can fault her talents. She is, quite simply, the sound of the soul of France.

JULIO IGLESIAS - Non stop [1990]

Julio's 'non-stop' is one of his most creative art thus far. This album is a two-thumps-up,again and again. If you want to cook for a friend, 'non-stop' will digest the food and make her beg for more! And if you want to hypnotise a friend, let 'non-stop' do the job. This album is so special that it can alure anyone from Bronx to Paris.Even thugs could make sense out of "Too Many Women".

GIANNA NANNINI - Perle [2004]

Graduating in literature and philosophy, music became Gianna Nannini's real passion, taking piano lessons at the age of 13, later moving to Milan to start her solo career, performing at small local venues. The singer/songwriter's self-titled debut album came in 1976, followed by Una Radura, released in 1977. While temporarily living in the U.S., Gianna Nannini recorded California, considered to be her first rock album. The artist's breakthrough came with her sixth album, called Profumo, which included her smash "Bello e Impossibile.

ADRIANO CELENTANO - Super best [1996]

Celentano was born in Milan at 14 Via Gluck (about which he later wrote the song "Il ragazzo della via Gluck"). His parents were from Puglia and had moved North for work.
Before his singer career, in Milan the metropolitan legend remembered Celentano as student-apprendice of Ghigo Agosti (European rock pioneer) during his music show in north Italy about 1955-1956 with the exordial guitarist Giorgio Gaber.
Heavily influenced by his idol, Elvis Presley, and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained his popularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies. In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful; indeed in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best effort. As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda Celentano, most notable to worldwide audiences for playing the Satan character in Mel Gibson`s The Passion of the Christ, and Giacomo Celentano. He also works often as a host for several Italian television shows.
He has released 40 albums: 29 studio albums, 3 live albums and 8 compilations.

JULIE LONDON - All Through the Night [2007]

This album is one of Julie London's very best. It's Julie performing what she does best...mid tempo ballads with a small group (The Bud Shank Quintet). Her smoky, sultry voice oozes over Bud Shank's alto sax, and intertwines with Joe Pass's guitar work. It's a romantic album, with a naughty temptation in London's voice.

The album has also been remastered in 24-bit by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios, and the result is crystal clear audio.

01. I've Got You Under My Skin
02. You Do Something to Me
03. Get Out of Town
04. All Through the Night
05. So in Love
06. At Long Last Love
07. Easy to Love
08. My Heart Belongs to Daddy
09. Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye
10. In the Still of the Night
11. You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to

BARRY MANILOW - Swing street [1987]

One of the most fiendishly clever concept albums ever. At first Swing Street seems like a collection of Fifties inspired tunes, but listen again. From the opening track to the last it tells a story. The title track sets the story of someone who has had a bad day and closes his eyes and goes to Swing Street...where everything becomes hunky dory. "Big Fun" the second track has Barry beginning his reverie in fantasy land, my favorite song on the album. The first half of the album, the swingin' half eventually gives way to the slower second half with excellent covers of "Summertime" (dripping with Southern sweat) and "Stardust Memories" before Swing Street finally fades to morning and a fully awake Barry sings "One More Time" to a lover. There's been a lot written about the techo jazz sound of this album, but the music perfectly fits the mood. I know Barry has tried to get his musical "Harmony" on Broadway for years. I saw the original at the La Jolla Playhouse. Barry, Swing Street would make a great musical.

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - Greatest hits [1995]

Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990), born in Dallas, Texas, was an American blues-rock guitarist. His broad appeal made him one of the world's most influential electric blues guitarists. [1] Known for his warm blues rock tone, Vaughan characteristically used very heavy strings on his guitar ranging from 11 to 13-gauge sets to give a fuller sound which he tuned down a half-step to the key of E flat. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Stevie Ray Vaughan #7 in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,[2] and Classic Rock Magazine ranked him #3 in their list of the 100 Wildest Guitar Heroes in 2007. He was the younger brother of Jimmie Vaughan, born 1951.

DEEP FOREST - Boheme [1995]

Deep Forest is a musical group consisting of two French musicians, Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez. They compose a new kind of world music, sometimes called ethnic electronica, mixing ethnic with electronic sounds and dance beats or chillout beats. They were nominated for a Grammy Award in 1993 for Best World Music Album, and in 1996 they won the Award for the album Boheme. Some of the proceeds from their album sales (over 10 million copies) have been donated to charity.

ROY BUCHANAN - Roy Buchanan [1972]

The recording and production on this, Roy Buchanan's first record for Polydor, is delightfully bare, sparse in ornamentation, and full of bum notes and aborted ideas that would be deleted on most commercial releases. It is a loose, highly improvised affair that amply demonstrates why the leader is one of the underappreciated giants of rootsy guitar. Straddling country, blues, and traditional rock & roll, Buchanan's playing is fiery and unpremeditated. His tone is delightfully raw and piercing, his solo ideas impetuous and uncluttered. On the instrumental tracks, such as his famous reading of "Sweet Dreams" or Buchanan's own "The Messiah Will Come Again," one can see why he was such an influence on Jeff Beck, another master of the instrument known for his genre-blending and ragged spontaneity. There is a slight Michael Bloomfield influence felt in Buchanan's blues playing, most evident in the first chorus of "John's Blues" and the quasi-Eastern ornamentations on "Pete's Blue." He plays with pitch, placing notes in unexpected places, constantly keeping the listener guessing. The country tracks, such as "I am a Lonesome Fugitive" and Hank Williams' "Hey, Good Lookin'," benefit greatly from Chuck Tilley's understated vocals. Despite Tilley's presence, the main focus on this record is Buchanan's wailing guitar, which punctuating the vocals with bluesy cries and country moans. The strongest track on Roy Buchanan is "The Messiah Will Come Again." This song opens with Buchanan's mumbled spoken word intro over quiet organ and then yields to spine-tingling, sorrow-laden Telecaster that cries and screams in existential torment before giving way in turn to percussive flurries that make less sense as melodic improvisation than as cries of passion. This is raw guitar playing and music making, not for the faint of heart. Fans of blues or country guitar, or those just curious why Jeff Beck would dedicate "'Cause We've Ended As Lovers" from Blow By Blow to Buchanan, would do themselves a favor by picking up this album.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL - The very best of...

My friend Phil and I were looking through his mum and dad's record collection. We were in their living room. We saw the album 'Greatest Hits.'I said; "she looks quite tasty there..." Phil continued my train of thought:" ..yeah, and now she's a fucking hideous smack rat!". We both laughed. The fact that we were both 'smack rats' ourselves didn't bother us. Like many gambling addicts or alcoholics etc, we were in denial - especially when we had money and were straight.
Apparently Andrew Loog Oldham had gone for Marianne on the basis of her virginal looks and name(which was an excellent name for a female pop singer). And the refined, aristocratic sounding music he thought she would do went with that image. She herself preferred classical music to rock and roll I believe. Her songs, like Greensleeves, were sort of a sly contrast to the bad boy, rhythm and blues music of the Rolling Stones, who Oldham wanted her to appear with in public, I think for publicity reasons. Though this album features the brilliant song 'Sister Morphine', later done by her ex-boyfriend's band.
Phil and I didn't play her; we put on the album 'Changes Two' by David Bowie. Then we just smoked cigarettes and drank vodka and orange. We were in denial, fancying ourselves as so straight(we had got a lot of money) that we were classier than the rest - poor teenage smack rats being just above glue sniffers and people who took slimming pills and cough mixture in our ranking.
Phil's mum came in. She was wearing skintight leather trousers, a tight T-shirt with dayglo colours that showed off her nipples and had heavily kholed eyes and bright purple lipstick. She was a 40 year old Kings Road chick.
Phil said to her: "Mum, tell him about what you said Marianne Faithfull's got up to.. and the other one"(he meant Anita Pallenberg). He went on to mention some lurid stories. As he was a junky, you couldn't take any of it at face value though. His mum shook her head in denial and said he had been exaggerating. When he went to the toilet, she told me: "at least she made something out of her bad experience and did some good records. She didn't sell knocked off gear on market stalls and hassle people all the time."
Phil heard this and replied:" But we've got an excuse; we're young - and we're gonna get clean when we're still young. She fucked herself up when she was in with The Stones and rolling in it. How thick can you get, eh?"
Maybe she did fuck herself up, but she had a career that had two distinct halves - before smack and after. Both were quite interesting, and show her gift for cabaret performance on record. I wouldn't say she was a great singer but she was an interesting musical personality.

GARE DU NORD - Sex n' jazz [2007]

In the spring of 2001 Gare du Nord kicked off when producers Doc and Inca were asked by a French promoter to deliver a soundtrack for a Fashion & Lifestyle Event in Brussels called Excellence. Instead of going just for moody sounds and loungy atmospheres the twosome decided to go beyond synths and beats and they composed a song cycle to express their contemporary interpretation of traditional jazz and blues. The soundtrack for the event became the first Gare du Nord album; (in search of) Excellounge and the single Pablo’s Blues were released to high critical acclaim in The Netherlands, a country that has a tradition when it comes to picking up new sounds and trends. That album, written, recorded and produced in just under three weeks generated a lot of international response too. In addition to a European release (both Pablo’s Blues and the second single Discotèk/Boogie All Night Long became hits) “Excellounge” was also released worldwide including several special editions in Australia, Russia and Canada. Was the first album largely Paris oriented, the second album Kind Of Cool (2003) took in just about the whole world with songs conceived in Brussels, Memphis, London and Berlin. The songs on Kind Of Cool are very diverse in nature and reach out further than the songs on the debut album; being instantly accessible the album showcases new facets of the versatile producers with each spin. The title song, a grooving jazz track in the Miles Davis mode and Kind Of Cool’s key track, the bluesy Sold My Soul, found it’s way to tv documentaries, tv series and movies.

AMALIA RODRIGUES

The History of fado
Amalia's voice is just incredible. Her tone, her expression, her ability to shade pitch ever so slightly to emote. She's just flat out one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Fans of fado of course know about her, but she ranks with Umm Kulthum, Judy Garland, Maria Callas, and few others who possess a great voice, seemingly limitless talent, and that most elusive of elements, soul. This recording or some such compilation should be in the collection of everyone who loves vocal music.

O Melhor dos Melhores [1994]

ROBERTA GAMBARINI - Easy To Love [2006]

Roberta Gambarini is a fantastic musician who happens to sing. Her instrument is pure and clarion. Moreover, she can scat like we haven't heard in years - since Ella Fitzgerald, I would aver. The arrangement of 'On the Sunny Side of the Street' is particularly notable for her scatting. Just outstanding.
You would never be able to tell that she is a native Italian, her English diction is utterly perfect. That's no small feat, and above all it speaks to the great ear she has. This offering is an auspicious debut for a singer I expect to hear great things from. It's clear from reading the liner notes, as well as her choice of material and the arrangements, she has a great respect for the giants of Jazz, especially the debt she owes to the inimitable Benny Carter.
These days there's a good bit of co-mingling of pop singers (Jane Monheit for example) with jazz singers. Make no mistake, Roberta Gambarini is the latter, and she has the goods to deliver.

CASSANDRA WILSON - Belly of the sun [2001]

"Belly Of The Sun", Cassandra Wilson's tribute to the smoky bogs of the Bayou, is a cognitive heatspell that invokes the legend of Robert Johnson, protest music and 70's Southern California rock in a alltogether new style.
Cassandra Wilson is one of maybe three vocalists that could pull off a project like this. Her ethereal contralto has in the past been used to master complicated jazz classic and pop throwaways, but classics like Blue Lights Til Dawn and New moon Daughter only suggested how imaginitive Ms. Wilson could be in her reinterpretation of other artists materials. The Band's "The Weight" becomes more of a plea than an offer of assistance, and Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm" is an acoustic dream, completely different (fortunately) than the original. Again daring her crowd to rethink pop prejudices, (as she did in covering "Last Train To Clarksville), Ms. Wilson makes Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" a treasure. It is hard to beleive this is the same song that previously invoked images of rhinestone cowboys.

VARIOUS - Sophie Solomon Poison Sweet Madeira [2006]

Sophie Solomon's voice is her violin. Whether she's performing with the LSO or playing with her own band, her music is a thrilling combination of technique and passion that refuses to be confined by the conventional parameters of the instrument. Her unique musical vision reaches its full flowering on her self-composed Decca debut solo album Poison Sweet Madeira, an audacious mix of different styles and influences given purpose and unity by her extraordinary violin playing. Poison Sweet Madeira features guest appearances by Richard Hawley, KT Tunstall and Ralph Fiennes.

VANGELIS - Fais Que Ton Reve Soit Plus Long Que La Nuit [1971]

Impossible to find on CD as well, but maybe so much for the better. Not rated because this is not a musical album. That said, it has a clear purpose: within the limits of the two sides of this LP, Vangelis created what he called a 'poeme symphonique' dedicated to the student riots of Paris 1968. Vangelis himself, living in France, had obviously witnessed the whole tumult and the only thing that makes me wonder is why he didn't actually record this piece earlier. Well, I guess Demis Roussos would have had a fit or something... Albums like these have nothing to do with music - rather it's just a piece of art that 'conserves' a little bit of the revolutionary culture of 1968, adds a tiny bit of Vangelis' perception of the whole epoch and makes the listener sit down and muse a bit on the reasons, essence, and consequences of the Paris events. Vangelis' own creativity here is essentially limited to selected bits of synthesizer peddling or piano piddling which are nice but definitely not climactic or cathartic in any way. It should be noted, though, that Vangelis uses the synthesizer a bit more prominently on this album than on, say, Sex Power, so historically it's about half a step forward or something like that. Apart from that, the album includes the following: 1) Noise - a lot of it. Street riots, crowd clamour, guns and tanks, general tumult, etc.; 2) Dialogue - plenty of it, mostly male and female students busily chatting discussing actual problems (I can't make head or tail of the dialogue apart from selected words or phrases, though - too many people talking at the same time kinda stands in my way of understanding, you know); 3) Chants and folk songs, French folk songs, mostly. Depending on the way you feel about French songs, this either brings in a serious musical note or renders the album completely unlistenable. The final purpose of the album is not quite clear; however, seeing as how the 1968 riots never really ended in any serious social changes, much like the hippie movement (not that I'm ready to discuss politics here), the general atmosphere of the album seems pretty morose and gloomy. Vangelis never strikes you as a particularly fun-loving guy, anyway, but I'd say that at least on the Sex Power tracks he managed to combine gloomy notes with a lightweight, occasionally frivolous tone; not so with Fais Que Ton Reve..., a very heavy album if you decide to get into it with all of your soul. Essentially, it's one of those 'end of the epoch' albums of despair and disillusionment, and if I'm allowed to philosophize a bit, it actually marks the end of an epoch for Vangelis personally.

LE MYSTERE DES VOIX BULGARES - Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares (1986)

My first encounter with this CD was in 1989. The public radio station at the Univesity of Texas in Austin had a radio show in the mornings that play a wide variety of music (It was on this station that I first heard the ditty "Don't Worry Be Happy"). One morning they played the final cut on this cd, Polegnala E Todora. I was transfixed. I promise you as I sit here now I can hear the richness of the voices and harmony that moved me in a way that was undescribable. For weeks he would play this one cut on this cd and I had to find it. This was pre-internet so finding it was not easy. Finally came across it in a record shop in Indiana of all places. I soon discovered that the experience was only enhanced by the rest of the songs on the CD. I was priviledge to hear these women at the famed Wolf Trap a few years ago. This cd is a must to own, however I'm of the opinion that it is something that doesn't necessarily connect with everyone (my family cringes everytime I make visitors listen to Polegnala E Todora) I call them my Bulgarian Women and although I already own the other 2 cd I see they come in a box set now and I intend to buy it and keep them in a safe place. This music is truly a wonderful experience. I do not understand a word of Bulgarian (although I have visited there) but this music really shows off the universality of the language of music. I cannot recommend this music too much.

CHRISTOPHER CROSS - Christopher Cross [1980] [84Version]

Christopher Cross had a relatively brief but spectacular career in the early 80's, and his debut stands as his most successful CD. It yielded a classic #1 adult contemporary ballad - "Sailing" (which was later remade by 'n sync!), which is a truly beautiful song. The other big hit (#2 for 4 weeks) was "Ride Like the Wind," which is more uptempo, but still mellow. A couple of other songs also made the Top 20 - "Never Be the Same" and "Say You'll Be Mine." The CD is very poppy and flows so well together. I originally bought the cassette when I was 12-years-old, and I replaced it on CD a few years ago. Highly recommended. This CD will appeal most to fans of mellow pop music, but it really is just great music.

DAVID GILMOUR - On an island [2006]

Pink Floyd mainman David Gilmour returns with his third solo album, his first in over twenty years. Light a candle in the dark, lay back, let go of all your worries and burdens, and go to a place where life's hassles melt away and nothing matters except for the moment you are in. Full of pleasant soundscapes, textured instrumentation, and excellent vocal harmonies, On an Island can take you there if you just let it.

LEONARD COHEN - Live songs [2001]

Live Songs is one of his early classics and should be part of every fan's collection. Please Don't Pass Me By with its spoken introduction is harrowing, Passing Through ("glad that I ran into you") is delicate and yearning and Tonight Will Be Fine is unsettlingly erotic. There is an intensity here that complements the studio versions very well, a side of early Cohen that fans will miss out on if they don't own this album. Some of this rawness later manifested on the Phil Spector-produced Death Of A Ladies Man to the consternation of many of Cohen's fans. But it was always a part of his musical make-up, as this album demonstrates. In some ways, Angels Of Light's album New Mother reminds me of the mood of Live Songs.

DOLLY PARTON - Just Because I'm a Woman [2003]

For any Dolly fan, this is a no brainer. Who wouldn't want to hear the album that started the phenomonon? All the characteristcs that come to mind when I think of Dolly can be found here. Her honesty, down-to-earth sensibility, ability to touch your heart, playfulness and spirituality. Her voice is a bit higher than I'm used to hearing but her honesty shines through in spades. I love the playful "I'll Oilwells Love You" and "Just Because I'm A Woman". Though overall I must admit to liking her current material more.As a bonus, there is a live version of "Just Because I'm A Woman" included that was previously unreleased. Also previously unreleased, and included on this set, is the first ever recorded performance of a signature Dolly song "Coat Of Many Colors". What a treat!

TEN TENORS - Tenology [2006]

This phenomenally popular all-Australian singing sensation performed their first full-length show in the late '90s while still university students Down Under. They shot to international fame when their harmonies brought down the house to Germany's 2002 Eurovision Grand Prix de la Chanson, televised to over 20 million viewers worldwide. Since then, they've played before over 77 million people, routinely selling out shows and winning hearts with their camaraderie, wit, and vocal prowess on selections encompassing gems from the classical tenor repertoire, operatic favorites and, with a nod to their youth, rock and pop opuses as well. From the colorful venues of the Australian outback, where their touring experience was born, to major venues everywhere, The Tenors' legend continues to grow, and their signature fusion of personal charm and great music shines on Tenology, their first-ever compilation.

ZAP MAMA - Supermoon [2007]

A sprawling example of "world groove," Zap Mama's sixth album is further proof that in these interconnected times the musical world really is shrinking. Born in the Congo and raised in the French culture of Belgium, Zap Mama founder and driving force Marie Daulne has always ignored the barriers between musical genres like so many outdated speed limits on a dusty highway, but on Supermoon she dips into so many styles--Afropop, R&B, hip-hop, funk--as to reduce those barriers to a delightful irrelevancy. Helped by a smorgasbord of big-name collaborators--Me'shell N'degeocello, Tony Allen, and Spearhead's Michael Franti all guest for one track each--Daulne turns African pygmy music into a rollicking club anthem on "Gati," borrows James Brown's "Payback" guitar riff on "Toma Taboo," uses the intricate polyrhythmic arrangement of "Go Boy" for a touching tale of an African immigrant, and evokes modern soul singers like Macy Gray on the title track. Through it all, the intricate vocal arrangements and production that are Zap Mama's trademark--performed largely by Daulne herself--never fail to astonish.

SARAH JOHNS - Big Love In A Small Town [2007]

This debut aims to fit into the feisty, down-home Gretchen Wilson/Miranda Lambert niche, but is undermined by uneven material (all of which the Kentucky singer had a hand in). Sarah Johns strikes a responsive, good-ol'-girl chord in the first three numbers: the beleaguered but resilient "When Do I Get to Be a Woman," the kiss-off to a man who likes his liquor too much in "If You Could Hold Your Woman," and the regretful "A Lot to Let Go Of." She rallies again with the independence of "That's Just Me Getting Over You" and the funny "He Hates Me." But three string-laden power ballads is at least two too many, and "The One in the Middle," about giving her middle finger rather than her ring finger to a cheater, is just juvenile. As for the title track, its evocation of "raisin' beans and babies...twenty acres out in the boonies" is predictable country hokum. If any of these cuts connect with country radio, the album will have served its puropose, but next time through somebody needs to exercise more quality control.

CASCADA - Everytime We Touch [2006]

Cascada is a trio made up of singer Natalie Horler, and two producers Yanou and DJ Manian. This album contains some remakes, lots of trance and a couple of pop ballads. Most people will by now have heard the hit "Everytime We Touch", which is a remake of a 1992 hit by Maggie Reilly from her solo album "Echoes", but other great tracks are "How Do You Do!" (Roxette's 1992 hit); "Miracle"; "Bad Boy"; and "A Neverending Dream"(originally by X-Perience from 1996's "Magic Fields.") Also on this album are versions of "Kids in America" (Kim Wilde), "Truly Madly Deeply" (Savage Garden), and "Wouldn't It Be Good" (Nik Kershaw). The lyrics are simple, the beats are catchy, and this light and breezy album is great for dancing or just chilling out with friends.

VARIOUS- Rhythms del mundo Cuba

Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba’s Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what’s amiss with the rest of the album.

CHAKA KHAN - Epiphany [Best of...]

Whether with the groundbreaking group Rufus or on her own, Chaka Khan has one of the most distinctive and influential voices in R&B. She's able to wail at full emotive throttle or deliver a love song with nuanced jazz-inflected tones, and sometimes even do both within the same track. This 1996 collection gathers some of Khan's biggest and most beloved solo efforts. Included here are the classic tangy attack of "Ain't Nobody" and the turntable-enhanced smash "I Feel for You" (penned by admirer and recent collaborator Prince). There's also the anthemic original version of "I'm Every Woman," the moody "Through the Fire," and her 1996 collabo with Me'Shell Ndegeocello, "You Never Miss the Water." As all great vocalists do, Khan takes control of every song, breathing fire and life into the words and interpreting them without overpowering their meaning. One listen to Epiphany and it's abundantly clear that, even though she's been AWOL from the charts for a while, Chaka Khan remains a founding mother of soul and funk, armed with a potent voice that can both illuminate and elevate.

LOREENA McKENNITT - The mask and mirror [1995]

Loreena McKennitt drew her inspiration for this album from 15th century Spain, where the cultures of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam coexisted uneasily, tied together by a common tradition of religious mysticism. McKennitt reflects the multi-culturalism in arrangements that mix the half-tone intervals and familiar instruments of the Aryan north with the quarter-tone intervals and dumbeg, oud, and tamboura of the Semitic south. The results are often intoxicating, even if the composer consistently prefers slow-moving tempos. There's a tension and density to this music that safely removes it from the new- age category. McKennitt's attempts to evoke medieval mysticism in her lyrics are less successful. She fares best when she draws her texts from other sources: Prospero's closing speech from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," Yeats's "The Two Trees," "The Dark Night of the Soul" by the medieval Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross, and the traditional narrative ballad, "The Bonny Swans." One these numbers, the shadowy, mesmerizing atmospheres conjured up by McKennitt's music are enhanced by the words rather than spoiled by them.

JANIVA MAGNESS - Bury him at the Cross Roads [2004]

I've seen Janiva many times live, sometimes in small clubs and sometimes at Blues Festivals and she ALWAYS puts on a fantastic performance. If there is a better female blues belter out there I haven't heard her. This cd is a departure from her previous ones as this is a more stripped down sound. Her voice has never been better and I think this may be my favorite cd of hers. If you want to hear what a real blues singer sounds like buy any or all of her CDs and you won't be disappointed. Also, if you ever get an opportunity to catch a live show you'll be glad you did.

ADRIANO CELENTANO - Per sempre [2002]

One of the best if not the best. Ashamed to say how many times I listened to this album. Never listened anything more that two times before. Never was a big fan of the Italian music either. But this one is phenomenal. The more you listen the more you like it. Chick Corea, Michael Thompson, Raf Padilla and the rest of the band are ... well, what do exspect from Chick, but you need to listen to him in the Italian arrangement. Must have, must listen and listen more and more...

GARY MOORE - Corridors of rower

Gary Moore rocks out on this album which originally came out in 1982. I love this remastered version with the 3 bonus tracks. All together you get 3 versions of the song "Falling In Love With You" which is a great rock ballad;I especially love the instrumental version where the singing is replaced by excellent guitar solos. Gary's guitar playing is top notch throughout the album. The guitar work at the beginning of "The End of the World" is blistering. This song also features Jack Bruce from Cream on lead vocals.Another familiar name apearing on the album is Ian Paice of Deep Purple who plays the drums. This is cd is one of Moore's better ones, right up there with his other 1980's hard rocking cds.

ROXETTE

Baladas en Espanol
The ballad hits

From 1989 to 1991, Roxette dominated the charts with a string of super-dramatic hits. "Listen to Your Heart," "It Must Have Been Love," "Fading like a Flower"--classics all, and they're all here, along with much else. Their ballads don't always follow the duo's comic dictum—Don't bore us, get to the chorus." "Queen of Rain," with its moving oboe breaks, takes time to grow, as does the string-laden "Crash! Boom! Bang!" There are misses here, too, notably "You Don't Understand Me," co-written with hit-maker Desmond Child, and "Salvation" sounds like a collage of other people's work. Fortunately, the two new tracks--"A Thing About You" (sung by songwriter Per Gessle) and "Breathe"--are sweet and strong enough to repair the damage.

GIANNI MORANDI - Platinum

Although I do not speak much Italian, I adore Italian music. This album is so much of what I love-passion, sometimes playful, and a true celebration of life. Grazie mille, Gianni Morandi! You are wonderful.

TOM JONES - 52 hits

Tom Jones became one of the most popular vocalists to emerge from the British Invasion. Since the mid'60s, Jones has sung nearly every form of popular music pop, rock, show tunes, country, dance, and techno, he's sung it all. His actual style a fullthroated, robust baritone that had little regard for nuance and subtlety never changed, he just sang over different backing tracks. On stage, Jones played up his sexual appeal; it didn't matter whether he was in an unbuttoned shirt or a tuxedo, he always radiated a raw sexuality, which earned him a large following of devoted female fans who frequently threw underwear on stage. Jones' following never diminished over the decades; he was able to exploit trends, earning new fans while retaining his core following.

CANDY & THE KISSES - Do the 81

UK compilation for act long collected by fans of the girl group genre, this New York trio recorded a handful of rare singles for Cameo and Scepter in the mid-1960's. Produced by Jerry Ross, 'The 81' was later a massive hit on the northern soul scene, other tracks were produced by Ashford & Simpson. This is the first-ever compilation devoted to Candy & The Kisses. It includes all their recordings for Cameo and Scepter, including 3 previously unissued tracks 'Lookie, Lookie (What I Got)', 'All You Gotta Do' & 'One Sweet Kiss'. 2001 release.

GLORIA ESTEFAN - GREATEST HITS

"The rhythm is gonna get you" is the tag line of one of Gloria Estefan's biggest hits, but it could also serve as the mantra for the Cuban-born singer's road to the top of the charts. Estefan's forte is middle-of-the-road pop, but all of her upbeat hits are fueled by driving Latin percussion, the feature that set Estefan's music apart from the rest of the flyaway pop of the 1980s and early '90s. Greatest Hits intersperses those great dance hits--"Conga," "1,2,3," "Get on Your Feet," and, of course, "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," with sweet ballads such as "Words Get in the Way," "Anything for You," and "Don't Wanna Lose You." This set also includes "Coming Out of the Dark," Estefan's triumphant comeback hit following her 1990 career-threatening tour-bus accident.

LIONEL RICHIE - Encore

Lionel Richie's Encore live album is wonderful! Though it came out three years later in 2004 of his 2001 concert in England, this is a very energetic live release. He is still in fine form singing his biggest solo and Commodores hits such as All Night Long, Still, Three Times a Lady, Penny Lover, Stuck On You (even the crowd's singing to the words!), Dancing on The Ceiling and his most recent hit Angel. I still feel like I'm at the concert after hearing this CD! And to these longtime artists doing standards albums, they need to take some pointers from Lionel and tear up some stages to sing their biggest hits and newer songs! The fans don't play around--they know all the words, just as these fans did at Lionel's concert for this album! This is yet another superb performance from Lionel, who's still at the top of his game in music!

LEONARD COHEN - Songs of Leonard Cohen

Time has been extraordinarily kind to Songs of Leonard Cohen. While it attracted considerable fanfare upon its release in 1968, not everyone was immediately captured by its dusky charms. Randy Newman, for one, couldn't resist the temptation to parody "Suzanne," the album's brooding opener, on his album. (Conversely, director Robert Altman brilliantly drew upon the dirges here for the soundtrack to his classic anti-western, McCabe and Mrs. Miller.) But what some once found to be pretentious and affected has come to feel penetrating and ageless. Seeded with what have become signature songs of the Canadian wordsmith ("Sisters of Mercy," "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," "So Long, Marianne"), the album has a narcotic quality that owes as much to producer/musical director John Simon's inspired folk-baroque soundscapes as to Cohen's lofty lyrics and earth-bound vocals.

EAGLES - Hotel California [1976]

It's no accident that The Eagles Greatest Hits might one day pass Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time-- the Eagles made great singles. By contrast, their albums could be spotty and strained by self-conscious artistry. Hotel California was arguably the band's best single album--it was certainly the Eagles' biggest original disc-- and it also underscored the band's need to make a big statement. The title tune reflected the album's theme of paradise lost in California, painting this picture with a musical arrangement that punctuated strumming guitars with dramatic drums, and perhaps the band's most famous lyric: "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." "New Kid in Town" was an equally fine albeit much more traditional Eagles ballad. "Life in the Fast Lane" aspired to hard rock but largely gunned its engine without taking off. The rest is okay, but nothing more than secondary Eagles songs that happened to be nestled into the album that came to define the `70s supergroup

HARRY BELAFONTE - Harry Belafonte

A most distinctive singer. His clear mellow voice combined with that Jamaican accent is a perfect vehicle to express the range of emotions contained in his Caribbean flavored songs. Then there are other songs, less exotic, but still delivered from the heart. There are dozens Harry Belafonte albums, but this one represents an accurate cross section of what the man is capable of. No regrets.

ARMIK

Piano nights [2004]
I have been reading many of the reviews for all of the armik releases . Quite a few reviewers have expressed a desire for " something different " from armik . I truly believe { with the release of this cd } that he heard you . Wait until you hear this cd . It is marvelous . The addition of the piano gives the selections a different spin and you will jump for joy when you give it a listen ... A must have !!!! To add to your collection.

Mar de suenos [2005]
Although I prefer "Gypsy Flame" this album is very good. Armik has done his homework. The beauty of this artiste is not only his impeccable technique, but his choice of material. Afficionados of Jessie Cook, Los Romeros will be pleasantly surprised by this effort. In any setting Armik's music fits the bill. But don't take my word for it, read the other reviews. If you'll notice most all reviews are favorable. Classy, intelligent music, from a classy, intelligent and very gifted gentleman.

Rubia [1996]
Armik is Master of the music. In Rubia all tracks are really good and i would determine that no one can make the album like armik. In rubia the track Mi Amor and seduction r best track of Rubia. It is very cool and i like it very much.i would say that it is again a great performance by Armik.

TIZIANO FERRO - Rosso relativo [2003]

Tiziano is very entertaining. As I've remarked of other Italian pop artists I've reviewed, the music is accessible and good for the study of Italian, i.e. for listening comprehension, as the vocal style is generally very clear. And amusing. My musical taste is eclectic, but I generally love the best of any genre (e.g. Jimi Hendrix is an all-time favorite). Ferro is very talented, but on at least one song (I believe on this album) the tune is reminiscent of Britney Spears (Uffa!) and yet is nonetheless enjoyable. My favorite songs on this album are "Imbranato" (Klutz), and "Boom boom" with it's very simple, yet very rousing English-language chorus (all songs here are sung primarily in Italian). I think even the cynical will be charmed. The only song I don't really care for is the gospel-style "Soul-dier" (i.e. soldier of the soul -- tee hee). I think it's sometimes beneficial to express some reservations in amazon "reviews" -- effusive praise always invites skepticism. Truth be told, I am insanely envious of anyone who can sing, 'cuz I sound like a camel clearing its throat. Tiziano is a gifted singer-songwriter, and I believe he's got a lot more to show us. If your musical tastes include mainstream pop, take a risk and purchase a CD by this talented young recording artist. By the way -- it's not as if I'm an expert on Roman genealogy -- but I get the feeling when I look at Tiziano's cover photo on "Centoundici" that I'm looking at a face that reaches back millennia, and it amuses me to think of his musical style in contrast to that of what his ancestors might have enjoyed.

TRINI LOPEZ - The best of []

If you want to have as many of Trini Lopez's official "hits" as they can put on a single CD, then start looking elsewhere because this "Best of Trini Lopez" collection does not fill the bill. But look over the playlist on this Australian collection and you may well decide you would rather have what you find here. All things considered it is a valid choice.

IL DIVO

Siempre [2006]
Simon Cowell's most ambitious vision yet - a multinational quartet of opera singers that sound like The Three Tenors and look like Armani models - has paid enormous dividends. Comprised of renowned Spanish opera and zarzuela baritone Carlos Marin, classically trained tenors Urs Buhler (Switzerland) and David Miller (USA), and French pop singer Sebastien Izambard, the group has enraptured minds – not to mention bodies – with studio albums such as Il Divo and Ancora. Il Divo's third album, Siempre (Always) continues their popular fusion of classical and pop with 11 more covers and original songs. New arrangements of moonlit classics such as "Nights In White Satin" (sung in Italian), "Without You" and "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" (both in Spanish), plus a new version of John Miles' evergreen "Music" (specially re-arranged by Miles himself) are sure to delight fans, as will the quartet's own compositions, which include the enchanting "Amor Venme A Buscar" and "Una Noche". A bonus rendition of West Side Story hit "Somewhere" completes yet another winning set from the most sophisticated (and well-dressed) boy-band in the world.

Il Divo [2005]
Il Divo are four exceptional young men with formally trained voices who take popular songs, old and new, to another level where the historic rift between pop and classical music is finally healed. The band were formed after a worldwide search which took more than two years. Consisting of an American, Frenchman, Spaniard and a Swiss, Il Divo spent the first half of 2004 in London rehearsing and recording. Some of their songs will be familiar like "Nella Fantasia" (based on Gabriel's Oboe from Ennio Morricone's penned score of The Mission) and a unique and powerful version of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart". The four principles share the lead throughout, combining to deliver choruses whose awesome power is matched by their tonal delicacy. Passion and restraint they show to be an irresistible aphrodisiac. Reflecting the multi-national character of the group, the songs are not all sung in English but drift between Spanish, English and Italian. However they are worded, all use the emotional Esperanto of love.

Ancora [2006]
'Ancora' is the second album from international opera quartet Il Divo. The album once again features a collection of pop and classical tracks all given the unique Il Divo treatment which tries to bridge the pop and classical divide. Also included is a special duet with the French-Canadian superstarCeline Dion.

Liza Minnelli - Results [1989]

This is THE desert-island-disc of all-time, for me. It was amazing then and amazing now. You can listen to this album straight thru and never have to skip a song...IT'S THAT GOOD. And, I need to mention it is the perfect marriage of Liza Minnelli with the Pet Shop Boys producing...Kudos to Julien Mendelsohn's production, too. The opening track "I Want You Now" is a solid opening shot...beautiful strings, great rhythm and a certain drama (without being TOO dramatic!). The next track, "Losing My Mind" was the 1st single and is one of the best tracks ever on any album. That song segues into another uptempo number "If There Was Love". There are ballads, also, most notably "So Sorry, I Said" which could really fit on any Liza Minnelli album. "Don't Drop Bombs" is a sonic masterpiece. "Twist In My Sobriety" is a new take on Tanita Tikaram's song and also resurrects the "Liza with a Z, not Lisa with an S" rap/chant quite effectively. "Rent" is a nice reworking of a Pet Shop Boys tune. "Love Pains" is the closet thing to a disco song on the album (and I've heard/think it is a remake of one!) Finally there is another splendid ballad "Tonight Is Forever" (another PSB remake) and the concluding, romantic "I Can't Say Goodnight".

BOB DYLAN - Desire [1976]

Following the string of absolute classics Dylan put out in the 1960s he slowly retreated from the scene into personal seclusion. The early 1970s left some fans scratching their heads. What was "Self Portrait" all about? And "New Morning"? Then he did a movie soundtrack for a Sam Peckinpaw film, and "Planet Waves" still seems to divide fans (some love it and some hate it). By this time he had completely shed any question of his desired role in the folk/protest scene of the 1960s. But he didn't go away, like many expected (and some really wanted). So what was up with Bob? Then suddenly, the mid 1970s saw Dylan releasing two albums that many fans rank amongst his best (and some called them "comeback" albums, though nearly every Dylan album has been called this by someone). In very early 1975 "Blood On The Tracks" apppeared like a miracle with its intimate and lush acoustic arrangements and sound. It even spurred a hit with "Tangled Up in Blue". Most critics and fans heralded Dylan's triumphant return. Dylan then outdid himself by releasing "Desire" in very early 1976.

KINKS - The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society [1968]

Sensing that the Beatles, Stones, and Who were radically transforming rock music by turning it literate and conceptual, Ray Davies decided the Kinks should be his vehicle to explore his unusual longing for a simpler time when the English empire was not in decline. A reliance on English music hall tradition and sentiments indicated in titles such as "Last of the Steam-Powered Trains," "Picture Book," and "Village Green" clearly show Davies's nostalgia streak. Davies's singing has always been rough and non-Kinks fans may have trouble getting past his sloppy pitch. But for those listening closely, the tales are one of a kind.

COWGIRLS - Girls night out

PAVLO'S DOG

Pampered menial [1975]
The vocals of Pavlov's Dog are up there with Geddy Lee and several well-known others in the castrati range, which is an acquired taste for some. However this is not a problem to this reviewer, and on any terms this album is so good it's frightening. Technically there is musicianship to rank with the best of classically-trained rock, with piano and violin and flute intermixed with searing lead guitar and amazing jazz bass/drums. Composition is also astounding -truly symphonic in conception and execution, a vast range of sounds and textures all planned and perfectly interlocking, from wall-of-noise to haunting stillness. And the third criterion -this stuff is true Art: It has feeling, it lifts the soul and transports the mind, reflects the inner life and challenges the spirit. A stunning achievement.

At the sound of the bell [1976]
1992 release on Columbia, a two CD set featuring the progrocker's 1976 LPs for the label 'Pampered Menial' and 'AtThe Sound Of The Bell', each in its entirety. 18 tracks inall, including 'Julia', 'Late November', 'She Came Shining'and 'Standing Here With You (Megan's Song)'. Doublejewel case.

THALIA - El Sexto Sentido Re+Loaded [2006]

A year after its original release, Thalia's solid El Sexto Sentido disc gets a facelift. Funny thing is, this Re+Loaded version actually improves upon its mostly successful predecessor. The nips and tucks have made it a smoother, more unified effort. Gone is Thalia's playful take on Tejano icon Selena's "Amor Prohibido." Any trace of English-language material--three songs in total--has also been removed. It's all replaced by a quartet of high-caliber Spanish-language work that makes Re+Loaded worth the double purchase. "Cantando Por un Sueno" is a self-affirming, fist-pumping anthem; and "La Super Chica" is an affecting moment of alt-girl pop power with a hint of 80's nostalgia. Best of the bunch is "No, No, No," a glittering, break-up bachata duet featuring Aventura member Anthony "Romeo" Santos. It's one of the disc's best moments, alongside the still-affecting "Seduccion," "Olvidame" and "No Puedo Vivir Sin Verte." Also included is a sweeping club remix of the ballad "Un Alma Sentenciada," courtesy of renowned DJ duo Hex Hector and Mac Quayle.

JOHNNY HALLYDAY - Ma verite [2005]

The 2005 Studio Album from the French Pop Legend is his Final Bow on the Universal Records Label. Following the Path Set by Elvis in the 1970's, These Recordings Are Nothing Like his First Output. In Fact, These Are Remarkably Mellow and Adult in Nature. The Set Dominated the French Pop Charts in the Latter Half of 2005, Marking Many Weeks at the #1 Pole Position.

AVENTURA - Love & Hate [2004]

If you're an Aventura fan, you've got to get this CD. It's quite different from "We broke the rules" - going beyond their trademark bachata style and giving a lot more attitude and personality. You're in for great fun and surprises, so don't hesitate. At this point my personal favorite on this album is "Deja Vu" sung by Henry. Last, but not least, the CD design and insert are done so well this time that they deserve a separate mention.

MIREILLE MATHIEU - Ennio Morricone

I have been a fan of Mireille Mathieu for over thirty years.
Everything she does she excells, but this album must truley be the jewel in the crown.
From 'Un jour tu reviendras' to 'Melodie', its sheer listening pleasure. The range of her unique voice, coupled with the tremendous amount of emotion that this lady can generate is typical of this French perfectionist.

VARIOUS - Flamenco new grooves [2005]

An adventurous set with an amazing sound production and a remarkable amount of sensitivity and plenty of new musical ideas. "Flamenco New Grooves" takes you one step beyond that of the hit "Flamenco Chill Sessions". Produced by G-Spliff, the album combines traditional Spanish music with the latest electronic structures, this time with countless surprises in instrumentation and interpretation. It is another step forward towards the mixing of electronic with ancient world cultures. An anthological album. "Without a question of a doubt the best compilation of Flamenco in Chill-Out style to date"

EDDIE COCHRAN - 20th anniversary album [1980]

Eddie Cochrane is one of the most underrated and influential rockers of the 50's. Had he lived, he easily would have taken his place with Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Chuck Berry as icons of that era. Considering his tantalizingly brief career, he contributed a number of classics to the rock repertoire. My favorite is the sensational "Twenty Flight Rock," the song that quite literally first attracted John Lennon to Paul McCartney in 1957. (Check out Paul's great cover version of this song on his Russian album). "Summertime Blues" is another outstanding song which is as vibrant as it was when first released 45 years ago.

CAT STEVENS

The best of... [2CD]

Greatest hits

JOAN BAEZ

The best of...

Diamonds & rust
Perhaps the most outstanding folk album of the 1970s, this collection represents Baez's blossoming from a girlish folk icon into a mature interpreter of folk music. The title track (and, to a much lesser degree, "Dida" and "Children and All That Jazz") showcases her songwriting, but the intimate spin she puts on the music of others is what makes this the remarkable work it is. On Jackson Browne's "Fountain of Sorrow," Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate" and John Prine's "Hello in There," the purity of Baez's clear soprano (deeper and mellower than on her early albums) expresses the gentle pains of nostalgia and what-might-have-been. The medley of "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair/Danny Boy" reminds us that no matter what other directions she moves in, Baez will always be a masterful singer of traditional folk music.

JULIO IGLESIAS

Romantic classics [2006]
Julio Iglesias--he of the endearing Latin accent, endless-summer suntan, and stunning charisma--could make "Mary Had a Little Lamb" sound sexy, so it's no surprise that the 11 selections here smolder with the approximate heat of high noon in his native Madrid. What may be surprising to longtime listeners, though, is the range of songs he chose to cover. While "It's Impossible," the Perry Como hit with the famously pretty-sad melody, comes across an obvious choice and benefits from a swooning yet sure-footed performance, two Foreigner classics, "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Waiting for a Girl Like You," seem somehow beneath our debonair ladykiller. Still, smothered by his signature passion, they play like entirely new songs--less earnest and searching, more insistent and sweet. Such is the case with Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" and, to some extent, the Cars' "Drive"; instead of sounding like lite-FM retreads, they become heated extensions of his Julio-ness. Older hits--"This Guy's in Love with You," "The Most Beautiful Girl"--benefit from a certain effortlessness; these are numbers pre-dipped in the knee-weakening romance Julio specializes in. Overall, it's a modern/classic commingling that proves what millions of women worldwide have suspected for decades: where practitioners of pulse-quickening, fantasy-fueling vocals are concerned, there is no equal.

NIGHTWISH - Century child

NIGHTWISH could very well have cloned their last full studio album, Wishmaster, and would have been guaranteed to sell as many copies without the fanbase batting an eyelash. Simply put, the band is that good. NIGHTWISH is not stupid, firmly believing in artistic integrity over sales and clearly having the balls to branch out, explore and experiment with their craft. For a start, the level of bombast seems to have been turned down a notch on Century Child in favour of a more metal approach, even singer Tarja toning down her all-out opera vocals somewhat and using her voice with much broader scope. Ironically, the band has become more operatic at the same time with the addition of bassist Marco Hietala - recently stolen from Sinergy - who acts as Tarja's male lead vocal counterpart on several tracks, making a huge impact on the band's sound. No question that NIGHTWISH would be just another band with out Tarja though, who shines brighter than she ever has before. ! Century Child is yet another firm step towards greatness.

TOTO CUTUGNO - Toto Cutugno [1996]

What a voice! I don't understand a word (okay, maybe five or six words) of Italian, but I know this man is passionate and intense. Toto can take a song and make it completely his own, even to the point of making the listener believe no one else in the world could do the song justice. Whether it is the innocent sounds of "Un'estate con Te" or the tormented voice behind "Sara," Toto's voice draws the listener in and makes him feel the passions behind the chords. Even if you don't speak English, the meaning of these heart-felt love songs is not lost.
